Don't look at a solar eclipse with direct vision. Only during totality, if you are in an area that experiences totality, can you look at a solar eclipse with the naked eye. And beware most viewing glasses- many will still transmit harmful radiation. The ONLY safe viewing method is via pinhole of more advanced optical instrument. A pinhole projector is just that- a piece of card with a small hole poked in it, held up toward the sun. Then a second sheet of card, paper, or just let the image fall onto the ground. There you will see a clear image of the sun during partial phases of the eclipse.





Also, don't forget to look at some of the mottled light under trees during an eclipse. You will see dozens of tiny eclipsed suns projected upon the ground! Very cool indeed.

No, either wear a pair of ';solar viewers';, which are special glasses made specifically for safe viewing, or make a pinhole projector. Here's how:


Get a piece of poster board. Prick a hole in the middle using a pin, the sharp end of a pencil, or a pen. When it's time to view the eclipse, take the board outside and find a light, flat surface; cement works best. Hold the poster board several feet above the ground so that it's over your head, but your head isn't covering the hole. You should see a perfect circle on the ground. If the circle is fuzzy, move the board closer or farther from the gound until the edge of the circle is sharp.
